Cost
K9 Cruiser costs $14.99. There is a mandatory double offer where a bonus second unit is automatically added for a fee of $8.99. This brings the total to $23.98. I found K9 Cruiser at a local Fry’s here in Las Vegas for $9.99.
K9 Cruiser Review
K8 Cruiser is an indoor dog toy that glides across the floor. It is designed to encourage pouncing while helping a dog expend its energy.
The appearance and function actually reminds me a bit of a kids’ product called Hover Ball that advertised a few years ago. In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if that item was the inspiration for K9 Cruiser. Both are hemispheric shaped and glide across the floor. Neither uses batteries, and both have rubberized edges to protect baseboard. Perhaps the only difference is that K9 Cruiser has a softer material that is easier for dogs to hold in their mouths.
Fortunately, the simplistic design of K9 Cruiser means it is less likely to fail in its function, as it is really only made to glide across the floor and squeak. That said, all pet owners know that every dog is unique and what one dog finds interesting, another dog may not.
For example, I have three dogs, and my young Golden Retriever loves anything that moves, spins, or makes noise. My older Golden Retriever and my Chihuahua do not, however. If you think your dog would like something like this, I think K9 Cruiser may be a safe investment.
As you can see in the video below, my 2-year old golden was quite ecstatic to play with K9 Cruiser. She chased it around the house until she had no energy left. As she plays with the toy, it appears that she is trying to bite it, and as she attempts to bite it, the toy moves slides the floor and she chases it. I would think that might frustrate a dog, but it seems like she actually prefers this over holding it in her mouth (I tried to give it to her, but she seemed to only want to chase it).
Bailey occasionally flipped K9 Cruiser over and put it in her mouth. When this happened, her teeth dug small scratches into the bottom of the toy. That quickly degraded its ability to slide smoothly across the floor, although it hasn’t really affected how Bailey plays with it.
You may want to also keep in mind that while K9 Cruiser is designed to safely bounce around your baseboards, your dog may not be as considerate toward your belongings while chasing this around. Imagine a 100-pound dog running after this around the home. That said, I have yet to have any spills or damage related to K9 Cruiser.
This toy isn’t designed for outdoor use, but after the bottom became degraded, I decided to try it outdoors on my patio, and it still worked pretty well.
July 2017 Update: After a couple of weeks, Bailey lost interest in K9 Cruiser, and it has gone largely un-touched since then. It did deliver a couple of weeks of fun, however.
After a small television marketing campaign, K9 Cruiser began rolling out to stores by mid-2017. I recommend purchasing it locally or on Amazon to avoid slow and costly shipping.
Alternatives
I haven’t seen an item quite like K9 Cruiser, but there are numerous dog toys that have advertised over the years. You may recall an As Seen on TV dog toy a few years ago called Wobble Wag Giggle that functions differently, but also is designed to move and keep your dog interested.
