Spicy Shelf Deluxe Review

Seeing a Spicy Shelf Deluxe ad the other day brought back fond memories from the Summer of 2014 when I shot my first video review with my brand new action cam. The item I reviewed was Spicy Shelf.

Spicy Shelf was a hot seller that summer, and I was the first reviewer to nab a unit when my local As Seen on TV store decided to sell their sole advance sample of the product.

To this day, I still have the original Spicy Shelf in my cabinets, but I don’t think much about it because it just sits there and holds spices and vitamins. I can tell you that after nearly 3 years of fielding comments for my written and video reviews that the original Spicy Shelf had a few problems, but overall it is one of the better-liked As Seen on TV products I’ve seen.

It looks as though the makers of Spicy Shelf have addressed one issue with the new Deluxe Model, and that is regarding durability. They tell us that the new model is 5 times stronger than the original. I found the plastic material from which Spicy Shelf was made to be a bit flimsy, and it was a major complaint among those who didn’t like the product. If you bought Spicy Shelf hoping to store glass jars, you probably noticed the unit sagging in the back under the weight of the jars. If you were like me, however, and primarily stored small plastic bottles, the durability probably wasn’t much of a concern.

I am disappointed to see the other major concern not addressed, which is the maximum height of the shelves.  The vertical clearance of about 4 to 5.5 inches (there are a couple of different height options) means that anything taller than that will be relegated to the top shelf or being placed in front of the unit, rather than underneath it. Having more height options would have been a nice addition.

There was another minor issue with the original that also doesn’t seem to be fixed, and that is the width of the shelves themselves. At only 2 inches wide, you can’t really store wide jars or bottles on (or under) the shelves without them protruding beyond the shelf. It wasn’t a major point of contention, but a few people did say the width was problematic for them.

Another new feature in the Deluxe model is a nonslip surface. This seems to be a nice addition, but not something that I considered to be a necessity, or even thought was a problem that needed to be addressed.

If you plan to use Spicy Shelf Deluxe to store heavier glass jars, this newer version will probably be a good fit for you. If, however, you are storing plastic bottles, the original may work just as well – and it can be found locally for less.

Alternatives

You can still find the original Spicy Shelf for about $12-$18 online and in stores. An Amazon Best Seller in this category is the Copco cabinet organizer, which only costs $8 and holds a very high consumer rating.

My Original Review

Admittedly, the video below isn’t my best work, but it does give you some of the basics of Spicy Shelf.
