Testing “Simplifying” Products: ZpillSafe, Game Boy Lighter, and Chef’n Egg Separator

Looking for items that promise to simplify everyday tasks, I picked up three products to see if they live up to their claims: the ZpillSafe pour spout, a Game Boy-inspired lighter, and the Chef’n Yolkster egg separator. Each of these had high ratings online, but as we know, reviews don’t always tell the full story. Here’s my take on each product after giving them a thorough test.

Below are links where you can pick up the items I tested in this review.

ZpillSafe Pour Spout: Hits and Misses

First Impressions

I paid $117.99 for the ZpillSafe, a silicone pour spout designed to reduce spills and fit onto most containers. It has a 4.3-star rating with over 200 reviews. My first impression? It feels similar to a dental night guard—rigid, but flexible. The claims are promising: spill-proof, easy to use, and made of food-grade silicone. But would it work as advertised?

Putting It to the Test

The first test didn’t go as planned. I tried it on a thin glass, and it immediately leaked from the bottom. That said, the instructions do specify that the glass rim should be at least 0.1 inches thick, so I tried thicker options. With a thicker plastic cup, it performed flawlessly. When I tested it with a chunky mug, it was completely leak-free, even with boiling water. For thin glasses, however, the results were disappointing—it simply doesn’t hold well.

Verdict on the ZpillSafe

The ZpillSafe works, but only if you use the right kind of glass. If your go-to glasses are on the thicker side, it could be a good spill-preventing addition. Otherwise, you might end up with a mess.

Game Boy Plasma Lighter: Fun and Functional

The Look and Feel

The Game Boy-inspired plasma lighter cost $24.88 and has a solid 4.5-star rating among over 500 reviews. Straight out of the box, it looks sleek and compact, though smaller than I expected. I liked the LED battery indicator lights, giving it a modern touch.

Testing Performance

The lighter works well for typical uses—lighting candles, for example, was a breeze. Even when I tested it against a fan, it held its flame (or arc) decently, though with some strain. For those who are drawn to unique designs, this is an eye-catching lighter that’s functional and surprisingly durable. It survived multiple drop tests on dirt and rocks without any issues, and it’s claims of being windproof appear accurate.

Verdict on the Game Boy Lighter

If you’re a fan of retro gaming or need a unique gift for one, this plasma lighter is both stylish and practical. It holds a charge for quite some time and can withstand daily use. It was my favorite item in this review.

Chef’n Yolkster Egg Separator: An Unusual Design

Out of the Box

At $7.95, the Chef’n Yolkster egg separator is marketed as a convenient tool for separating egg yolks from whites, with an interesting spider-like design. Though it’s dishwasher-safe, I was initially disappointed by the quality—it felt like about ten cents’ worth of plastic.

Practicality and Testing

The separator hooks onto the edge of bowls or cups to help separate the yolk. However, it proved finicky. Thin egg whites didn’t pass through as easily, leaving me with a clunky separation process and, honestly, a bit of a mess. Despite testing it on different bowls and cups, I found it inefficient and more trouble than it’s worth.

Verdict on the Chef’n Yolkster

The Chef’n Yolkster was the least successful of the three products. While it technically works, there are more effective and less expensive options out there for egg separating. Save your money and skip this one.

Conclusion: Three Products, One Clear Winner

Of the three products I tested, the Game Boy-inspired lighter is the clear standout, offering a great mix of style, durability, and functionality. The ZpillSafe can be a good addition if you frequently use thicker glassware and want to avoid spills, but for thin containers, it’s hit-or-miss. Lastly, the Chef’n Yolkster egg separator fell flat and didn’t deliver on its promise of an easier egg-separating experience.
