D-Frost Wonder Review

D-Frost Wonder is an As Seen on TV defrosting plate which is said to help thaw anything quickly. If the design of D-Frost Wonder looks familiar, that’s because there have been other products in recent years that sport a nearly identical design and marketed under different names. You may recall a product a couple of years ago by the name of Rapid Defrosting Tray, which looked about the same as this product.

While it could be seen as a bad thing that D-Frost Wonder isn’t quite as unique as the advertising may have us believe, the good news is that these plates do actually work. Sort of – and with some caveats.

Although the product websites states that it is “made of a special metal that draws the cold out of anything frozen in minutes,” what we are really looking at is an aluminum plate.

It is true, however, that aluminum does an efficient job of transferring heat to food from the surrounding air. It does so better than the materials used in counter tops or other kitchen surfaces. In that respect, D-Frost Wonder does work “faster” as they claim. It may cut defrosting time down, but you’ll want to have realistic expectations when using it.

You could use an aluminum tray to achieve similar results, although D-Frost Wonder looks better and is more compact.

I found that the traditional thawing method of using a bowl of cold water was as good or better than D Frost Wonder, depending on the food item being defrosted.

Finally, the USDA recommends three thawing methods: in the microwave, in a refrigerator, or using cold water. Regarding counter thawing, we read, “Perishable foods should never be thawed on the counter or in hot water and must not be left at room temperature for more than two hours.”

The price with shipping is about on par with other defrosting plates. You may want to peruse the large number of other defrosting plates on Amazon before you make your final purchase decision.

Now that D-Frost Wonder is available in stores, you may want to purchase locally to avoid shipping delays and costs.

Below is my hands-on test of D Frost Wonder, where I test it against the traditional method of thawing in a bowl of cold water.

We inherited one of these things and it actually works pretty well. I just saw they are on TV and I’m seriously thinking about getting a second one for the RV.

We’ve used one for about 20 years. Don’t expect miracles but flat items like steak, pork chops, etc. it really is faster than any other method.

I’ve found that cutting chicken breast or steak into tenders before freezing works best on the defrost wonder. As for hamburg, I press into burgers prior to freezing.
