Egg gadgets have become somewhat of a specialty for me over the years. With over 30 egg-related tools tested since 2016, I’ve seen the good, the bad, and the downright messy. In this review, I dive into four new contenders: an egg cracker, two decorative egg cutters, and two egg dispensers. Let’s see how they measure up!
Where to Purchase
Below are links where you can pick up the items covered in this review.
The Egg Cracker
First Impressions
Marketed as a mess-free way to crack eggs with one hand, this $12 tool claims to keep shells out of your bowl while maintaining clean hands. With a 3.6-star rating on Amazon, it’s clearly divisive.
Does It Work?
The egg cracker is easy to set up and does crack eggs neatly. However, the yolks broke every time for me, making it unsuitable if you’re aiming for intact yolks. Rapid use revealed that while my hands stayed clean, stray bits of shell sometimes made their way into the bowl, which defeats one of its main selling points.
One-Handed Operation Test
I tried using it one-handed, as advertised. While it technically worked, the process felt awkward, and yolk still ended up on the prongs, creating a slight mess.
Verdict
If you’re okay with broken yolks, this gadget is passable. For precise egg cracking, though, I’d stick to the traditional method.
Decorative Egg Cutters
First Impressions
These $1.88 cutters (from Temu) claim to create fun, decorative edges for hard-boiled eggs. They come in two styles: wavy and serrated, and they’re primarily marketed for deviled eggs.
Putting Them to the Test
The cutters worked surprisingly well when cutting eggs widthwise, creating attractive edges. However, cutting lengthwise (which is more practical for deviled eggs) resulted in uneven edges and some collateral damage. Despite this, the results were charming enough for presentation purposes.
Final Thoughts
These are great for anyone looking to elevate their egg dishes aesthetically. They’re cheap, easy to use, and deliver on their promises.
Egg Dispensers
The Contenders
- The Generic Egg Dispenser – A basic rolling dispenser that holds up to 14 eggs.
- The Eggstra Space Egg Holder – A collapsible unit that shrinks as you use eggs, saving fridge space.
Testing in the Real World
The Generic Egg Dispenser struggled to roll eggs smoothly, often leaving eggs stuck at the top. Worse, when eggs did move, they tended to drop abruptly, risking breakage. One casualty occurred during testing.
The Eggstra Space Egg Holder, however, performed well. As eggs were removed, the holder smoothly collapsed to conserve space, making it both functional and fridge-friendly.
Verdict
The Eggstra Space holder was the clear winner. It’s safer, more efficient, and overall more practical.
Conclusion
Here’s how the four gadgets stack up:
- Egg Cracker: Functional but flawed, especially for anyone who needs intact yolks.
- Decorative Egg Cutters: A win for visual appeal, particularly if you enjoy hosting or want a polished look for your dishes.
- Generic Egg Dispenser: Disappointing and risky for your eggs.
- Eggstra Space Egg Holder: A smart, reliable solution for egg storage.
