Today, I’m diving into a truly unusual product that caught my eye while strolling through the alcohol aisle of my local grocery store: Eggo Brunch in a Jar, a waffles and syrup cream liqueur. At 40 proof and priced at around $23 (On sale from a $28 list price), it’s definitely a curiosity. Opinions online are divided, so I had to see for myself whether it’s worth adding to your brunch table or holiday drink menu.
Where to Purchase
You can find this product in most grocery stores in the alcohol aisle. The manufacturer also offers direct delivery to some states.
First Impressions
The jar itself immediately grabs your attention. Described as an “Appalachian sippin’ cream,” it’s produced and bottled by Sugarlands Distilling Company. The back of the jar promises a “creamy partnership between Eggo and Appalachian sippin’ cream,” with the flavor of toasty waffles drizzled in syrup. Intriguing, right? As I cracked it open, the aroma of sweet alcohol and maple syrup wafted up, which was a promising start.
When poured into a glass, the liqueur looks creamy and milky, resembling other dessert-style liqueurs like Bailey’s. The scent confirmed my initial impression: it has a syrupy sweetness with a hint of the familiar cream liqueur profile.
Taste Tests
I decided to try it a few different ways to get a full sense of its versatility.
1. Straight from the Jar
Sipping it plain, the liqueur was surprisingly enjoyable. It reminded me of Bailey’s with a subtle syrupy twist. However, it’s extremely sweet and the “Sugarlands” name feels quite fitting here. While smooth, the sweetness might be a bit much for some.
2. On the Rocks
Adding ice was an improvement. The ice tempered the alcohol bite and toned down the sweetness slightly, making it smoother and more enjoyable. The flavors seemed more balanced this way, and the syrupy undertones didn’t overwhelm the experience.
3. Mixed with Coffee
This is where Eggo Brunch in a Jar truly shined. I added a splash to a hot cup of coffee (in a Freakin’ Reviews mug, naturally), and it paired beautifully. The bitter coffee balanced out the liqueur’s sweetness, creating a rich, indulgent drink similar to Bailey’s but with a unique syrupy note. If you enjoy cream liqueurs in your coffee, this might become a new favorite.
4. With Eggo Waffles
Of course, I had to test this with an actual Eggo waffle. First, I dipped the waffle directly into the liqueur. Surprisingly, the alcohol flavor became more pronounced, overpowering the syrupy sweetness. Drizzling it over the waffle was slightly better, but it still didn’t quite hit the mark until I added traditional syrup as well. Combining Eggo Brunch in a Jar with both syrup and waffles finally struck a balance—the flavors blended perfectly, creating a boozy, brunch-worthy treat.
Final Thoughts
Eggo Brunch in a Jar is certainly a novelty, but it’s an enjoyable one. Its flavor profile is very reminiscent of Bailey’s with a distinct syrupy twist, and the sweetness level is high. It’s versatile enough to enjoy straight, on the rocks, in coffee, or even drizzled over desserts. That said, the “waffle” flavor isn’t as prominent as I expected, and syrup takes center stage.
Would I buy it again? Probably not regularly. It’s more of a seasonal or holiday treat than an everyday drink. I could see it replacing Bailey’s in holiday cocktails or being used to impress guests with its quirky branding and flavor. At the very least, it’s worth trying once for the experience.
