The Inflatable Hype: My Experience with the Self-Assembling EZ-Bed Air Mattress

Self-assembling beds have taken social media by storm, promising ultimate convenience and functionality. When I saw a TikTok video of an air mattress with a frame that inflates and assembles itself, I was intrigued. After some skepticism—and a $360 purchase—I decided to put the queen-size model to the test. Here’s my honest review of this bed, from unboxing to sleeping (or trying to), and whether it’s worth the hype.

Where to Purchase

You can pick up the EZ-Bed for around $360 as of this December 2024 update.

First Impressions: Unboxing and Setup

The first thing I noticed when the box arrived was its portability. The case had wheels and a handle, making it easy to move. Setup was straightforward: plug it in, adjust the firmness, and press inflate. The control panel offers settings from “Plush” to “Extra Firm” and options to inflate or deflate.

Watching the bed self-assemble was, admittedly, fascinating. In under a minute, the mattress expanded, and the frame extended like a futuristic piece of furniture. However, the inflated bed had some quirks—parts of the frame didn’t fully touch the ground, and the mattress had a slight U-shape. It looked promising, but I was curious (and a little apprehensive) about how it would perform overnight.

Comfort Test: My First Night’s Sleep

Unfortunately, the first night was an unmitigated disaster. The mattress itself was firm, but not in a supportive way. Instead of a smooth sleeping surface, I felt every bump and divot in the design. It was so uncomfortable that I woke up with a sore back, hips, and shoulders.

Adding to the discomfort, the legs of the frame seemed unstable, especially on the “firm” setting, lifting off the floor at times. The noise from the shifting frame and mattress only added to the frustration. I can honestly say I’ve had better sleep on a yoga mat.

Making it Work: Adding a Mattress Pad

Determined to salvage my purchase, I added a 3-inch foam mattress topper ($70 from Walmart). The difference was night and day. With the topper, the bed felt much more like a traditional mattress. Stability improved slightly, and the overall sleep experience became tolerable.

However, this “fix” came at an extra cost, pushing the total to over $400. At this price point, you could buy a basic bed frame and mattress or a high-quality air mattress for far less.

Packing It Away: Easier Said Than Done

Deflating the mattress and collapsing the frame was far from the smooth process shown in those TikTok videos. It required quite a bit of manual intervention to get everything back into its compact, portable form. The “easy storage” feature, while functional, felt more like a chore than a convenience.

Final Verdict: Is It Worth It?

This self-assembling air mattress is a novelty, but it doesn’t deliver on comfort or value. Without a mattress pad, it’s nearly unusable, and even with one, the price outweighs the benefits. Yes, it’s portable and easy to set up, but the teardown process and lack of inherent comfort make it hard to recommend.

For occasional use, especially if you invest in a good topper, it might suffice—but there are cheaper and more reliable options on the market. I’ve actually used this a few times since my original review was posted, and my guests had no major complaints about the comfort. So in that case, it could work as a viable guest bed if space is an issue and you don’t want to leave a bed set up when guests aren’t around.
