As Seen on TV knives have been a mainstay of television advertising for decades, going back to the legendary Ginsu Knives. Now with Sensei Slicer, we are told that we can obtain a knife which is 40% sharper than traditional double-beveled knives. Indeed, sharp single-edged blades are known to be a part of Japanese culinary tradition. Korin, a respected Japanese manufacturer of chef knives, describes this type of knife:
The single-edged blade is a unique feature of traditional Japanese knives, which is directly linked to Japanese cuisine and history. Traditional Japanese cuisine aims to preserve and accentuate the true flavors of fresh and seasonal ingredients, making a sharp knife is essential to this process.
Of course, knives by Korin tend to range from $180 to $900 and up, which leads to the question as to whether a $10 As Seen on TV knife can compare?
In short, no.
That, however, doesn’t mean that Sinsei Slicer is all bad, but we have to be realistic when comparing this product to a high end chef knife. A sharp knife doesn’t necessarily mean it is a durable knife. While Sensei Slicer will likely be seen as sharp by the majority of consumers, it will probably rank as an average knife for depending on how it is used. We feel that slicing vegetables, for example, will yield better results than cutting chicken. Not all knives are right for every cutting job, and that applies to this knife as well.
The integrated holes reminds us of another As Seen on TV product from a few years ago called Aero Knife, which was touted for its ability to cut without sticking. That feature does work with some types of food, although its function is somewhat over-hyped.
Sensei Slicer has not (as of this writing) advertised on television, although internet ads have been seen. We aren’t sure if it will go into full production or disappear after a limited test marketing run.
