Testing the Vomiting Chicken
My goal was simple. I wanted to see how well it could separate eggs and how easy it was to use. I tried several approaches:
- Cracking an egg directly on the edge of the chicken
- Using my Crack’em egg cracker and dropping the egg in
- Separating single eggs and then trying two eggs at once
Single Egg Test
For the first test, I cracked one egg into the chicken and tilted it to let the whites flow out. Right away it became clear that the opening in the beak is on the small side. Instead of a smooth stream of egg whites, I got more of a slow ooze that would hang there and create a traffic jam at the beak.
I could get the whites out, but it required a lot of shaking and jiggling. Even after that, there were still traces of egg white left inside with the yolk. So the separator technically worked, but it was far from efficient. I would not call it impressive.
Second Single Egg
I tried another egg to see if the first one was a fluke. The second egg behaved similarly. The whites slowly came out, but again it was a slow process that required shaking and coaxing. It did separate, but it was not the kind of smooth performance you would expect from a tool that is supposed to make the job easier.
Two Eggs at Once
Next I tried cracking two eggs into the chicken at the same time. This really pushed the limits of its capacity. The egg mixture rose almost to the top and even started to seep out before I tried to pour anything. When I tilted it forward, some whites did come out, but once again the small opening caused a backup.
The whites kind of hung in the beak and needed constant shaking. One of the yolks broke on the way out, and after all that effort there were still bits of white clinging to the yolks inside. In other words, two at a time is not a good idea, and even with one egg it never felt particularly efficient.
Function vs Novelty
There is no question that this thing is cute. As a visual gag or as a fun little item to bring out when you have guests, it absolutely has some appeal. Watching the egg whites pour out of the chicken’s mouth is amusing and a little gross in a good way.
As a tool for people who separate eggs often, though, it comes up short. It is slower and messier than the simplest traditional methods.
