Philips Smokeless Indoor Grill Review
If you’ve seen ads for the Philips Smokeless Indoor Grill, you’ve no doubt been impressed by some of the advertised features, such as a cool drip tray that eliminates smoke, infrared heat, and quick heat-up time.
To use Philips Smokeless Indoor Grill, you turn it on and wait about 6 minutes in order for it to reach 446 degrees F. There is no heat setting, so that is the only temperature you will have to work with. You may find that it takes another minute or two in order to reach the target temperature. Although there is little to no smoke, heat does emanate from the unit, so you’ll want to use it in an open area. Once the grill is sufficiently heated, food can be placed on the grates and grilled as normal, although there is no cover or lid that can be closed. The grill uses infrared technology to generate heat, which is not in the same location as the pan where drippings fall, resulting in almost no smoke. Because it uses infrared heat, there are also no flareups.
There are only two parts to the unit, a base and the grill. Both have nonstick surfaces for easy cleaning, but you will want to allow the unit to completely cool before attempting to clean it. Using a sponge with warm soapy water is probably all you’ll need to keep the dripping tray clean, although it can also be placed in the dishwasher. Because the drippings are not heated, there is also less splatter coming from that area. Some users have suggested lining the dripping tray with foil to make cleanup even easier.
This grill is ideal for anything you’d prepare on a larger grill, such as steak, hamburgers, hot dogs, chicken, kabobs, veggies, toasting buns, and more. You’ll get grill marks and charring just as you’d expect with outdoor grills.
As far as possible cons go, there are a few minor points worth mentioning. Grill purists my miss the added flavor of using charcoal, but that is probably a worthy trade-off for convenience. It’s probably big enough to feed a couple of people, but not sufficient if you’re having a party. Because there is no lid, you may want to prepare for some splatter occurring outside of the grill area. The chrome top can also pick up splatter, too. The size of the grill could make storage a concern for some people. Despite being named a “smokeless grill,” there can be smoke with this unit. It depends on what you’re cooking, but some smoke is certainly possible. Finally, at a cost of nearly $300, this grill could be too expensive for some consumers who may be forced to look at other options, which I’ll discuss below.
For those in apartments or high rise condos who can’t cook on their patios, a device like this is a perfect fit. It is also ideal for grilling in colder months when you don’t want to fire up your outdoor grill in 12 inches of snow.
Overall, the Philips Indoor Smokeless Grill brings the outdoor grilling experience indoors, minus the smoke and flareups.
