Rocket Fishing Rod is a fishing rod that casts like a hand-held gun. Does it work? Read our Rocket Fishing Rod review.

Rocket Fishing Rod is a fishing rod for kids that shoots like a toy gun, rather than requiring kids to cast a fishing line. The product website is rocketfishingrod.com, which was first registered back in 2006, although the product has been on and off of that domain for years. The screen shot below shows how the product website appeared in December 2016.

Rocket Fishing Rod Review
The idea of Rocket Fishing Rod is compelling: Kids can shoot their line into the water without having to cast a traditional rod. It combines the fun of a Nerf gun with real-world fishing. You simply pump the handle, launch, and reel it in.
As an extra safety feature, the bobber only releases the hook after it has landed in the water. Rocket Fishing Rod is said to be made from rugged high-tech precision engineering.
So the big question is whether or not Rocket Fishing Rod actually works? With a product as established as this, consumer reviews are quite in agreement… that it rarely works as advertised.
Take a look at the dismal consumer ratings on Amazon, where it holds an underwhelming 2.2 star rating. You’ll find such descriptions as, “terrible item,” “disappointed,” “zero stars,” “$40 wasted,” and “junk.” You may find slightly higher ratings around the web (such as Toys R Us), but many of those positive reviews are from people who purchased it as a gift and haven’t even used it yet.
Although the idea of Rocket Fishing Rod is clever, it is an idea that has been poorly implemented. The durability is questionable at best, with a rather large consensus of consumers stating that it broke on – or shortly after – the very first use.
Overall, it is difficult for us to recommend Rocket Fishing Rod, when so many consumers have reported breakage and abysmal durability.
Alternatives
Although the design of Rocket Fishing Rod is unique, there are numerous fishing rods designed for kids. Something like this no-tangle youth fishing rod may be a more realistic angling product for kids.
Television Commercial
The YouTube video below demonstrates the problems many users have had with the product. The reviewer concludes, “This thing will last you about 10 casts and then before you know it, it’s in your fireplace and you’re pouring kerosene all over it.”
